The Young Women’s Christian Association opened a new facility for county women in 1916 in Van Wert, largely through the generosity of businessman George H. Marsh. Marble, tile, and gleaming woodwork greeted those entering the lobby of the Van Wert YWCA. (Ken Cripe collection.)

The YWCA offered recreation, education programs, and housing for women in a Christian environment. Meals were offered at nominal prices in the attractive cafeteria. (Ken Cripe collection.)

The Young Men’s Christian Association also opened its new facility in Van Wert on West Main Street in 1916. The building and program were funded primarily from the estate of John Strandler, a successful Van Wert harness maker and businessman. The YMCA shared the objectives of the YWCA in similarly stately surroundings. This card is postmarked 1921. (Author’s collection.)
